Home Maintenance Tips

It seems that we all know that if one maintains a car with regular maintenance including oil changes, etc. it will last for more miles than if you don't maintain it properly.  People think about it because they don't want to get stuck with a broken down car if they need to get to work.

What most people don't think about is that the same rules apply for your household appliances.  If you take care of them properly, they will last longer, and who really likes to go shopping for new appliances, let alone shelling out money that you would rather use for other things?!  The average life expectancy for a refrigerator, washer and dryer are 13-14 years.  This can be significantly less if you ignore them.

Here are some tips for making your appliances last:

For your washer and dryer;

  1. Don't overload the washing machine and choose the appropriate level for the size of the load.
  2. Heavy clothing such as jeans and towels should be spread out over two or more loads to avoid added strain to the machine.
  3. Clean the dryer lint filter before every load.
  4. Clean out the exhaust vent system at least once a year.  This is not only for better efficiency, but it can help prevent fires.  Be sure to vent the dryer outside, never into the house.

For your ventilation system;

  1. Have the heating/cooling systems serviced annually.
  2. Replace or clean the filters on your ventilation system monthly.
  3. Do not operate an air conditioner unit or furnace on an extension cord.  The compressor draws a lot of current and can be damaged if insufficient voltage is continually supplied.

For your refrigerator;

Vacuum the cooling tubes as needed.  Keeping them clean will improve efficiency and prolong life.

Pools and spas;

  1. Keep the proper water level at all times.
  2. Maintain the chemical balance.
  3. Clean the basket strainers regularly.

All of these items will either increase efficiency or prolong life or both.  If you do need to replace an appliance, make sure you look for Energy Star rated appliances in addition to the features you want.  They will save on operating costs versus non-rated models.

We hope these hints are helpful.  If there is another topic you would like to see us cover, please let us know.
