Who pays the commissions?

HI,

It is interesting to note that many people don't know how Realtors get paid in real estate transactions. Some of this may come from the fact that agency relationships vary from state to state and indeed across the globe.  In Arizona, commonly a listing agent represents the seller, and a buyer's agent represents the buyer.  The seller pays all commissions and the listing agent through agreements with the MLS pays a portion of the gross commssion to the buyer's agent.  It's actually quite simple and the buyer should know that although the seller in effect pays the buyer's agent's commission, the buyer's agent represents the buyer not the seller.

There was a fantastic article in Inman News regarding the history of agency and commissions.  If you aren't sure about how it works and why, check it out.  Find it here.
