Black Mountain Boulevard meetings

HI,

The City of Phoenix and the AZ Dept of Transportation (ADOT)  are beginning the  prelimary design and environmental study of Black Mountain Blvd (BMB)  The BMB has been planned as part of transportation infrastructure since 1990 and was included on the city's street classification map in 1994 before any of the developments in the area sprouted.

Phoenix and ADOT are holding public scoping meetings this week to provide information on the project and get input from area residents.  The first meeting will be held at Pinnacle High School, 3535 E. Mayo Blvd on Wed. Jan. 25th from 6:00-7:30 PM and the second will be on Thurs. Jan. 26 at Sonoran Trails Middle School,5555 E. Pinnacle Vista, also 6:00 to 7:30 PM.  The information provided will be the same at each meeting.  For more information on the project, check out the City's web site devoted to the project

BMB has stirred a lot of talk and opinion on both sides.  Opponents don't want the additional traffic in the neighborhoods and are concerned about school crossings and proponents like the access provided that will allow for shorter commute times.

There are valid points for both.  Residents who back onto the BMB alignment will surely see increased traffic and road noise and possilbe negative affect to their home value.  Unfortunately for those folks, the road was planned prior to the home construction.  Additionally, there is a lot of concern from parents of students at Pinnacle High School.  PHS is close to the south end of BMB and its ramps directly from SR 51.  Hundreds of students cross BMB at Mayo Blvd and there is concern, even with a traffic light at the intersection that speed and increased traffic may result in car/pedestrian accidents.

Advocates note that traffic continues to increase on Tatum Blvd and direct access from SR 51 will save many residents of Desert Ridge, Tatum Highlands and other communities time off their daily commute.

Whatever your thoughts, it is important if you are a resident of the area affect to attend one of these meetings, learn the details of the project and provide your input.  Community involvement is key to successful planning and our community's future.
