A Passion for real estate.

Hi, I just got back from the RE/MAX of Western Canada conference in Victoria, BC.  This is my second year attending and it was just as good this year.  This conference is basically their awards conference with lots of informational seminars and entertainment rolled in.  It was a time to meet some old friends and make new ones.

One of the scheduled events was a seminar with a motivational speaker, Steve Gilliland.  I have seen many speakers like this and almost all have been worthwhile.  Mr. Gilliland definitely fits in that category.  A good speaker captivates his/her audience and he certainly did so.  With a great mixture of humor, serious content and thought provoking ideas, I think his speech left everyone in the room with a redefined sense of purpose.

His main point was “Never lose your passion”.  Whatever that passion is, it is important to remember why you are doing what you are.  For me, I walked out thinking about why I got into the business of real estate, and how my life is affected by everything I do and everyone I know.  In the current challenging market it is easy for anyone to lose their passion and succumb to factors that leave one doubting.  My passion is my family.  Their happiness is more important than anything else.  Secondary to that is my passion to help other people.  But it is also fully integrated into that primary passion.  It is easy to say that I am in the business of real estate.  But that isn’t what I do.  I don’t sell homes; I help my clients determine what is important to them and how their decision regarding real estate will affect them as a whole.  The moment I stop getting satisfaction from seeing a smiling face at closing on a home is the moment I will need to find a new career.  I don’t anticipate that will ever happen, nor do I want it to.  I can make a living with another career, but none will bring me the satisfaction I get from helping an individual realize one of their dreams.  It is definitely a passion, one that makes me whole, and that I know my family enjoys as well.

Think about what your passion is, or even was.  If it doesn’t shine as bright as it once did, focus on it, rediscover it and make it happen again.  Your life will be better for it.
