Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all!  I hope that this New Year brings happiness to all.  may we all get along and make it a great year!

I want to take care of a little confusion regarding RE/MAX.  On December 24, the owner of the RE/MAX 2000 franchise in Gilbert, AZ notified his agents that he was closing down.  This became a big story in the local media, and due to some less than stellar reporting became construed to things it is not.  So, let me clear this up.

First, all RE/MAX offices world wide are franchise owned.  Due to this aspect, RE/MAX International and other RE/MAX offices were not aware of the developing situation at RE/MAX 2000.  Within 24 hours of notification the Chairman of RE/MAX Int'l and other executives were in  Phoenix to begin working toward a resolution of the situation.  This is one franchise of many in the Phoenix area.  I have my license with RE/MAX Excalibur in Scottsdale.  These two franchises are completely unrelated other than they are both franchises of RE/MAX.  RE/MAX International, and RE/MAX Excalibur have nothing to do with the decision of this independent owner.  RE/MAX HAS NOT pulled out of the Valley.

Because of some not so clear reporting, many people thought that all RE/MAX office in Phoenix were closing.  This is obviously not the case.  In fact, there are 54 offices other than the RE/MAX 2000 offices in the metro area, and 104 in AZ

RE/MAX 2000 had 13 offices and 350 agents.  The decision apparently was made to close due to financial reasons.  Unfortunately, it sounds as though this owner didn't really follow sound business practices and had way too much overhead.  It is unfortunate that he chose to close completer versus consolidate.  That would have been more prudent on many different levels.

News is often slow around the holidays, and since this was announced on Christmas Eve, it was a hot story.  An additional question is... did you know that in the past 3 months 4 other major brokerages in the Southwest filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  None of them were RE/MAX.  RE/MAX has the #1 market share, and therefore became the big story.

Regardless, I want to assure all of my clients that I am not affected by this and neither is RE/MAX Excalibur.

Sincerely,

Adam P. Tarr
