Tax Questions

There is a simple question I hear a lot from Canadian buyers.  What taxes do I have to pay? The answers aren't as simple, because that question really should be divided into a few questions.  There are different taxes levied here than in Canada.  You may have to pay a sales tax where we don't.  So click on the questions below to get the answers to the questions that are important to you.  Don't forget that nothing should replace the professional advice you can get from your accountant or tax specialist.  These answers should be used as general information.   Any purchase should be based on a thorough investigation including the appropriate professional advice.

How much are property taxes?

Am I subject to any capital gains taxes when I sell?

I have heard about withholding taxes.  What are they and do I have to pay

them?

Do I need a U.S. social security number (tax ID #), and will I have to file a U.S. tax return?

Will I be subject to double taxation in the US and Canada?

Will I have to pay income tax if I rent out my vacation home?
